SUMMARY:EXPLORE THE HISTORIC BIGHAM HOUSE IN CHATHAM VILLAGE
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, February 14\n3:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. \nThomas Bigham House\n(also known as Chatham Hall and the Chatham Village Clubhouse)\n655 Pennridge Road\nPittsburgh\, PA 15211 \n$25 per person \nThis tour is limited to 20 participants. \nPurchase a ticket below. Tickets will not be available after 11:30 p.m. on February 13. \nJoin us for a very special program at the Thomas Bigham House\, in historic Chatham Village. Constructed in 1849\, the house is the former home of Thomas James Bigham (1810 to 1884). Bigham was an attorney\, a legislator\, the owner of two newspapers\, and bearer of the nickname “Old Statistics\,” among other things—an altogether fascinating person. \nToday\, though\, Bigham is perhaps best known as an abolitionist\, and his home most historically significant as a stop on the Underground Railroad. Architect David Vater\, a long-time resident of Chatham Village\, will share his deep knowledge of the Bigham House’s architecture and history through a slide presentation\, followed by a tour of the house. If weather and the grounds’ condition permit\, participants will have the opportunity to walk from the house to the point from which fleeing slaves would have seen the home and experienced a sense of refuge\, however temporary. \nBigham House is part of the National Register of Historic Places’ Chatham Village Historic District. Our organization awarded it a Historic Landmark Plaque in 1990. \nTour meeting point:  Bigham House\, 655 Pennridge Road\, Pittsburgh 15211 \nTour ending point:  Same as meeting point \nPlease arrive 15 minutes before start time in order to ensure that the tour gets underway on time. \nParking: Free parking is available along Pennridge Road and Olympia Road. Please do not block residents’ driveways. \nAccessibility:  Bigham House is handicapped-accessible. \n———————————————————————————————————————— \nAll tour participants under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Children under the age of 13 may attend tours free of charge. By purchasing a ticket for this tour\, you acknowledge that you are physically able to undertake the tour\, assume all personal risk during the tour\, consent to being photographed during the tour\, and permit PHLF to use your image in our communications. \n All ticket sales are final.

SUMMARY:SPECIAL TOUR: CMU'S COLLEGE OF FINE ARTS
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, October 25\n10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. \n$25 per person \nThis tour is limited to 20 participants. \nPurchase a ticket below. Tickets will not be available after 11:30 p.m. on October 24. \nHenry Hornbostel was one of the most inventive architects working in Pittsburgh in the early 20th century\, putting his own creative twist on traditional architectural ideas\, embracing new building technology\, and often trimming his structures in beautifully wrought terra cotta ornament. His biggest field of play in Pittsburgh was the campus of Carnegie Mellon University (formerly Carnegie Technical Institute)\, winning the design competition for its master plan in 1904. And perhaps his grandest design for the original campus was the College of Fine Arts (CFA; originally the School of Applied Design)\, begun in 1912. Complementing its spectacular assemblage of Hornbostel buildings\, the University’s Architecture Archives house one of the most significant collections of original Hornbostel documentary materials. These include his design drawings for the buildings on campus. \nJoin us for a rare opportunity to visit the Architecture Archives to see a selection of drawings of the CFA\, followed by an in-depth tour of the building by a faculty member from the School of Architecture. In addition to discussing how Hornbostel’s European trip as a student inspired the design of the College of Fine Art’s Great Hall\, she will “decode” the themes and details of this exceptional building. \nTour meeting point:  Lobby of Hunt Library\, 4909 Frew Street\, Pittsburgh\, PA 15213. \nTour ending point:  Great Hall\, College of Fine Arts\, 4919 Frew Street \nPlease arrive 15 minutes before start time in order to ensure that the tour gets underway on time. \nAccessibility: This tour is handicap accessible. Please notify us of your needs two business days in advance of the tour. \n_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ \nAll tour participants under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult. SUMMARY:BUS TOUR: VISIT THREE HISTORIC CARNEGIE LIBRARIES
DESCRIPTION:HOMESTEAD\, BRADDOCK\, AND CARNEGIE \nSaturday\, October 11\n9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. \n$100 per person. ( includes lunch + bus shuttle) \nThis tour is limited to 20 participants. \nPurchase a ticket below. Tickets will not be available after 11:30 p.m. on October 4. \nAndrew Carnegie’s greatest cultural legacy to the United States is the 1800 libraries whose construction he funded. Money for operating the buildings\, however\, was another matter: Carnegie left resources for running them to only four communities\, all in the Pittsburgh region. The Carnegie Free Library of Duquesne was demolished in 1968\, but the Braddock Carnegie Library (1889)\, Carnegie Library of Homestead (1898)\, and Andrew Carnegie Free Library & Music Hall (1901) survive. All three are housed in impressive architectural landmarks that were designed to be centers of their industrial communities. As those towns declined in the late 20th century\, their libraries also experienced great financial hardship. \nToday\, the three libraries are again thriving community hubs\, thanks to extensive architectural restorations that have been guided by determined leaders\, carried out by sensitive architects and contractors\, and funded in part by the very people who use the buildings. Join us for this incomparable tour\, on which each library’s director will share stories about the challenges and triumphs of restoring these splendid structures and how the libraries’ continuing operation is being ensured. \nTour meeting point: Station Square\, Pittsburgh\, PA 15219. Instructions for parking and meeting the bus will be provided to registrants in advance of the tour. The bus will depart at 9:00 a.m. sharp. \nTour ending point: Station Square\, by 2:00 p.m. \nPlease arrive 15 minutes before start time in order to ensure that the tour gets underway on time. \nAccessibility: The libraries are located on hilly terrain\, and the bus on which we will travel has steps that might be difficult to navigate with assistive equipment. The bus is not equipped for wheelchair access.\n________________________________________________________________________________________________________ \nAll tour participants under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult. SUMMARY:Architecture\, Preservation & Building Aesthetics in Europe
DESCRIPTION:Illustrated Presentation \nThursday\, October 9\n6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. \nThe Frick Pittsburgh Art Museum Auditorium\n7227 Reynolds St.\nPittsburgh\, PA 15208 \n$25 per person \nThis program is limited to 100 participants. \nPurchase a ticket below. Tickets will not be available after 11:30 p.m. on October 8. \nRecently back from a summer of exploring Italy and other parts of Europe by bike\, on foot\, and through its buildings\, Eric Fisher and Bea Spolidoro\, the brains behind Pittsburgh’s Fisher ARCHitecture\, will share insights into what American architects can learn from their European counterparts in this lecture. \nWhether trekking the hills of their adopted summer home in the northern Italian province of Como or biking from Vienna to Budapest\, the Shadyside-based architects are keen students of the historic structures that have formed the context of their remote practice for the past five summers. They are inspired in particular by the responsiveness of European buildings to their climate and historic context\, and they believe American designers need to be more accommodating in this regard. \nWhether constructing new buildings or renovating old ones\, Spolidoro and Fisher believe that it is possible to “design for the future\, preserving the past while embracing innovation and reinvention.” In this presentation\, they will explore how the design\, construction\, and space of the best European new buildings and renovations respond to their historic settings and a changing climate. \nThis lecture is part of Pittsburgh Architecture Week 2025\, happening from October 3 to October 10. Click here to learn more and register for the various events. \nAbout the presenters: \nBea Spolidoro\, RA WELL AP\, is an Owner/Principal of Fisher ARCHitecure. An Italian architect registered in Pennsylvania and the 2022 President of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Pittsburgh. Bea is passionate about building sustainable\, healthy environments at any scale and has worked on commercial and residential projects\, from multi-family affordable housing to high-end residential. \nEric Fisher\, AIA LEED AP\, is an Owner/ Principal of Fisher ARCHitecture. A fourth generation Pittsburgher\, Eric is a Harvard-educated architect who puts that experience he has gained working for renowned architects around the world to use in his hometown. While in Los Angeles\, he assisted with the design of the Getty Museum for Richard Meier and Partners. Eric has a vast portfolio of residential\, commercial\, and institutional projects. \nPlease arrive 15 minutes before start time in order to ensure that the tour gets underway on time. \nAccessibility: This tour is handicap accessible. Please notify us of your needs two business days in advance of the tour. \n_________________________________________________________________________________ \nAll tour participants under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult. SUMMARY:NEIGHBORHOOD TOUR: ALLEGHENY WEST
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, October 4\n10:00 a.m. – Noon \n$25 per person \nThis tour is limited to 20 participants. \nPurchase a ticket below. Tickets will not be available after 11:30 p.m. on October 3. \nIn the 1890s\, so many wealthy industrialists and merchants built mansions in a section of what was then Allegheny City that one of the streets there was nicknamed Millionaire’s Row. Men with familiar last names of Jones\, Laughlin\, Phipps\, and Kaufmann hired well-known architects to build their mansions and churches. A variety of Victorian architectural styles—Colonial Revival\, Richardsonian Romanesque\, Italianate\, Second Empire\, and Greek Revival—filled the streets. Many of the structures still stand in the area that is the destination of this tour: Allegheny West. \nStroll along with our docents through Pittsburgh’s smallest neighborhood as they talk about the area’s affluent past\, its prosperous present\, and the buildings’ architectural details. Highlights will include the house where America’s Agatha Christie began her career\, the birthplace of a famous ex-pat writer\, and the home where the Steelers’ Art and Dan Rooney lived. You also will learn how residents banded together in the 1960s to prevent urban renewal from altering their neighborhood’s ambience. \nTour meeting point:  Brighton Road and Western Avenue\, Pittsburgh\, PA 15212. Meet in the park on the northwest corner. \nTour ending point:  Corner of Brighton Road and W. North Avenue \nPlease arrive 15 minutes before start time in order to ensure that the tour gets underway on time. \nAccessibility: There is a slight uphill walk from the tour’s starting point to Ridge Avenue. This tour is handicap accessible. Please notify us of your needs two business days in advance of the tour. \n___________________________________________________________________________________ \nAll tour participants under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult. SUMMARY:SPECIAL WALKING TOUR: HISTORIC HARMONY
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, September 27\n10:00 a.m. – Noon \n$25 per person \nThis tour is limited to 20 participants. \nPurchase a ticket below. Tickets will not be available after 11:30 p.m. on September 26. \nHarmony\, PA\, is a small town with “big history\,” to paraphrase its namesake museum. This burg located 30 miles northwest of Pittsburgh is the site where the first shot of the French & Indian War was taken in 1753—at young George Washington. A group of Germans rebelling against the Lutheran Church immigrated here to create their own religious commune\, called the Harmony Society\, and established the town in their name in 1804. Upon pulling up stakes to move to a larger site father west a decade later\, the Harmonists sold their land and the buildings they constructed on it to another separatist religious group\, the Mennonites. How interesting to think that this place in what was once the wilderness of Western Pennsylvania was host to so many renegades. \nThe Harmony Museum preserves not only the history of the town\, but also nine buildings from the Harmonist and Mennonite eras. Our tour\, which will be led by Museum docents\, will include several of these structures as well as others that tell the bounteous history of this humble place. \nTour meeting point:  Harmony Museum\, 218 Mercer Street\, Harmony\, PA 16037 \nTour ending point:  Harmony Museum \nPlease arrive 15 minutes before start time in order to ensure that the tour gets underway on time. \nAccessibility:  Not all areas of the Harmony Museum are accessible to people with disabilities. The tour route is otherwise fairly flat. \n______________________________________________________________________________________________ \nAll tour participants under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult. SUMMARY:FOCUS TOUR: HISTORIC ALCOA BUILDING
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, September 26\n10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. \n$25 per person \nThis tour is limited to 20 participants. \nPurchase a ticket below. Tickets will not be available after 11:30 p.m. on September 25. \nThe original headquarters of the Aluminum Company of America has been an extraordinary presence on Downtown’s landscape ever since rising from its site between 1951 and 1953. The world’s first building clad in aluminum\, it is literally a skyscraper-size advertisement for the material: staircases\, light fixtures\, elevators\, mail chutes\, and even sculpture were fabricated in aluminum. It was designed by Harrison & Abramovitz\, the same New York City firm that brought to Pittsburgh the U.S. Steel Tower and several other buildings in Downtown. \nThe Alcoa building has experienced two changes in ownership since 1998 and is now owned by a Philadelphia company that carried out a comprehensive renovation of the building and converted part of it from offices to apartments. Recognizing the building’s significance\, it named the apartment section The Residences at the Historic Alcoa Building. Our tour will be led by a principal of Strada\, the architectural firm that designed the renovation and conversion. \nTour meeting point:  Lobby of the Historic Alcoa Building\, 611 William Penn Place\, Pittsburgh\, PA 15219 \nTour ending point:  Lobby of the Historic Alcoa Building \nPlease arrive 15 minutes before start time in order to ensure that the tour gets underway on time. \nAccessibility: This tour is handicap accessible. SUMMARY:DOWNTOWN: PENN-LIBERTY HISTORIC DISTRICT
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, September 19\n10:00 a.m. – Noon \n$25 per person \nThis tour is limited to 20 participants. \nPurchase a ticket below. Tickets will not be available after 11:30 p.m. on September 18. \nThe Penn-Liberty corridor in Downtown Pittsburgh was an important retail\, commercial\, and entertainment center in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The Historic District—designated as such at both the City and Federal levels in 1987 and later expanded—encompasses a large section of the Penn-Liberty corridor\, including the Cultural District. It features outstanding examples of historic buildings ranging from early skyscrapers to more modest cast-iron-front buildings to spaces that offered vaudeville shows\, many of them designed by the area’s most significant architects. \nFollowing a decades-long period of decline in the mid-20th century\, the district has experienced substantial revitalization in the last 30 years\, thanks in large part to historic preservation. Tour participants will see great architecture\, learn about the district’s history\, and understand the crucial role of the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust and PHLF in bringing the district back to life. \nTour meeting point:  Katz Plaza\, corner of Penn Avenue and Seventh Street\, Pittsburgh\, PA 15219 \nTour ending point:  Katz Plaza \nPlease arrive 15 minutes before start time in order to ensure that the tour gets underway on time. \nAccessibility: This tour is handicap accessible. Please notify us of your needs two business days in advance of the tour. \n_____________________________________________________________________________ \nAll tour participants under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Children under the age of 13 may attend tours free of charge. By purchasing a ticket for this tour\, you acknowledge that you are physically able to undertake the tour\, assume all personal risk during the tour\, consent to being photographed during the tour\, and permit PHLF to use your image in our communications. \nAll ticket sales are final.

SUMMARY:NEIGHBORHOOD TOUR: EDGEWOOD
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, September 13\n10:00 a.m. – Noon \n$25 per person \nThis tour is limited to 20 participants. \nPurchase a ticket below. Tickets will not be available after 11:30 p.m. on September 12. \nSettlement of what is now Edgewood Borough started as early as 1808 and accelerated with the arrival of the railroad in the 1850s\, making commuting to Downtown Pittsburgh and Turtle Creek Valley much easier. By the 1880s\, the population and business activity had so increased that residents demanded organized local government. In response\, Edgewood Borough was incorporated in 1888\, guided by what its leaders called “the Edgewood Idea.” This planning philosophy promoted Victorian elegance in the physical environment; responsible\, self-sufficient government; and community institutions to support those who lacked resources. This new tour will visit a mixture of residential spaces and public institutions—physically separated by the very railroad that facilitated the borough’s growth. Participants will see buildings in a wide variety of styles; tour highlights will include a train station designed by prominent Philadelphia architect Frank Furness\, an eclectic confection of a residence that is topped by a tower-cum-widow’s walk\, and the Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf. \nTour meeting point: Main entrance to the Edgewood Club\, 1 Pennwood Avenue\, Edgewood\, PA 15218 \nTour ending point:  The Edgewood Club \nPlease arrive 15 minutes before start time in order to ensure that the tour gets underway on time. \nAccessibility:  The tour route is relatively flat\, but the tunnel that connects the two sections of the tour has steep steps to ground level. \n____________________________________________________________________________________________ \nAll tour participants under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

SUMMARY:DOWNTOWN WALKING TOUR: WOOD STREET
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, August 22\n10:00 a.m. — 11:30 a.m. \n$25 per person \nThis tour is limited to 20 participants. \nPurchase a ticket below. Tickets will not be available after 11:30 p.m. on August 21. \nIn the past dozen or so years\, Wood Street has experienced many changes and improvements. Extending from what was once a cobblestoned wharf on the Monongahela River to Liberty Avenue\, the street has hosted all manner of commerce and trade since the early 19th century—from a paper manufacturer\, to the “Bathtub King of Pittsburgh\,” to a former bank that now houses a public transit station and art gallery. Today’s Wood Street is the product of three principal influences: a growing university\, a large financial institution\, and concerted\, ongoing historic preservation efforts by PHLF and others. The varied scales and styles of buildings along this artery provide a first-rate architectural experience. And while other PHLF tours have touched on some of the buildings along Wood Street\, this exploration of its entirety will provide insights into some aspects of the City’s history that are less-well-remembered. \nTour meeting point:  Outside the entrance Point Park University’s Center for Media Innovation\, 14 Wood Street\, Pittsburgh\, PA 15222 \nTour ending point:  Outside the Conestoga Building\, 1 Wood Street \nPlease arrive 15 minutes before start time in order to ensure that the tour gets underway on time. \nAccessibility: This tour is handicap accessible. Please notify us of your needs two business days in advance of the tour. \n____________________________________________________________________________ \nAll tour participants under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult. SUMMARY:NEIGHBORHOOD TOUR: FIRST HISTORIC DISTRICT OF SEWICKLEY
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, August 2\n10:00 a.m. – Noon \n$25 per person \nThis tour is limited to 20 participants. \nPurchase a ticket below. Tickets will not be available after 11:30 p.m. on August 1. \nIn 1895\, G.F. Keller dubbed Sewickley the “Queen of Suburbs\,” as its location 12 miles down the Ohio River from Pittsburgh removed it from the smoke and congestion of the City. Because it could be reached from Pittsburgh by rail in less than half an hour\, Sewickley attracted an affluent clientele who commuted to the City for work. This tour explores homes on Beaver Street\, Pine Road\, Centennial Avenue\, Woodland Road\, and Academy Avenue—all lying within Sewickley Historic District #1. (Sewickley Borough has three historic districts.) The tour also includes houses in the adjacent Edgeworth Borough. It encompasses a variety of architectural styles in works by some of the most prominent local architects and architectural firms of the times. \nTour meeting point:  Corner of Beaver Street and Grant Street\, Sewickley\, PA 15143 \nTour ending point:  Corner of Beaver Street and Grant Street \nPlease arrive 15 minutes before start time in order to ensure that the tour gets underway on time. \nAccessibility:  Some of the streets in this historic district are hilly. SUMMARY:FOCUS TOUR: CHILDREN'S MUSEUM OF PITTSBURGH & MUSEUMLAB
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, July 26\n10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m \n$25 per person \nThis tour is limited to 20 participants. \nPurchase a ticket below. Tickets will not be available after 11:30 p.m. on July 25. \nHere’s a recipe for a scrumptious architectural experience: Take one 19th-century Renaissance Revival-style U.S. Post Office building. Add a disused planetarium in the “stripped classicism” of the 1930s\, when it was built. To bind them\, mix in a contemporary building sheathed in thousands of plastic squares that sing when the wind blows. Top off the assemblage by re-purposing a beloved 1880s library building constructed by one of Pittsburgh’s great industrialists\, leaving visible all vestiges of the building’s past lives. What do you get? A feast for the visual palate that will stick in your memory long after you leave this extraordinary collection of buildings that comprise the largest cultural campus for children in the United States. \nThe tour will be led by senior staff of the Museum and Museum Lab. \nTour meeting point:  Lobby of the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh\, 10 Children’s Way\, Pittsburgh\, PA 15212 \nTour ending point:  MuseumLab\, 6 Allegheny Square East\, Pittsburgh\, PA 15212 \nPlease arrive 15 minutes before start time in order to ensure that the tour gets underway on time. \nAccessibility: The Children’s Museum’s main entrance at 10 Children’s Way is wheelchair accessible. SUMMARY:SPECIAL TOUR: HISTORIC THORNBURG
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, July 19\n10:00 a.m. – Noon \n$25 per person \nThis tour is limited to 20 participants. \nPurchase a ticket below. Tickets will not be available after 11:30 p.m. on July 18. \nRising on a bluff above the valley carved by the Chartiers Creek\, the Borough of Thornburg is a little piece of Southern California southwest of Pittsburgh. The planned suburb was created in 1899 by Frank Thornburg and his cousin David on land that had been in the family since 1806. Early houses built here were in the Queen Anne Style. By 1904\, however\, the Pittsburgh Gazette celebrated the “model and aristocratic suburb” for its “most unique collection of houses near Pittsburgh.” \nThe variety of historical residential styles would soon be augmented by homes inspired by Frank Thornburg’s personal passion: the contemporary Mission- and Craftsman-style houses he saw and studied during travels in Los Angeles and vicinity. With a willing accomplice in his cousin\, architect Samuel McClarren\, Thornburg would create an enclave that still retains its architectural and natural integrity and that continues to delight with its touch of SoCal style. Our tour will be led by the borough’s historian. \nTour meeting point:  Thornburg Community Center\, 545 Hamilton Road\, Thornburg\, PA 15205 \nTour ending point:  Thornburg Community Center \nPlease arrive 15 minutes before start time in order to ensure that the tour gets underway on time. \nAccessibility: Thornburg is located on very hilly terrain. SUMMARY:FOCUS TOUR: TWO LANDMARK CHURCHES OF DOWNTOWN
DESCRIPTION:First English Evangelical Lutheran Church and Smithfield United Church of Christ \nFriday\, July 18\n10:00 a.m. – Noon \n$25 per person \nThis tour is limited to 20 participants. \nPurchase a ticket below. Tickets will not be available after 11:30 p.m. on July 17. \nLocated 525 feet from each other\, First English Evangelical Lutheran Church and Smithfield United Church of Christ seem to hail from different architectural universes. The modest scale and sturdy demeanor of First Lutheran (Andrew Peebles\, dedicated 1888) call to mind an English country church. In contrast\, Smithfield United (Henry Hornbostel\, dedicated 1927) feels more attuned to the tall buildings that had been rising in Pittsburgh since the 1890s. With good reason: it’s built on a steel frame\, and its unusually airy steeple is constructed of aluminum\, a quintessentially modern material. The churches’ interiors draw attention and encourage contemplation in equally distinctive ways\, with exquisite artistry in wood\, stained glass\, and mosaic. \nSpoiler alert for this tale of two churches: First Lutheran Church was formed when a group broke away from the parent congregation of Smithfield United Church of Christ. The two congregations’ histories\, in other words\, are interwoven. Tour participants will be delighted by the architectural and historical surprises these two churches hold. \nTour meeting point: Courtyard of First English Evangelical Lutheran Church\, 615 Grant Street\, Pittsburgh\, PA 15219. Note: As of this writing\, the sidewalk in front of the church is closed from the end of the courtyard to Strawberry Way. Please approach the church from Sixth Avenue \nTour ending point: First floor of Smithfield United Church of Christ\, 620 Smithfield Street\, Pittsburgh\, PA 15222. \nPlease arrive 15 minutes before start time in order to ensure that the tour gets underway on time. \nAccessibility: First Lutheran Church is fully accessible to people with disabilities. Smithfield United Church of Christ’s accessible entrance is located to the left of main entrance; the church does not have wheelchair-accessible restrooms. \n_______________________________________________________________________________ \nAll tour participants under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult. SUMMARY:NEIGHBORHOOD TOUR: NORTH POINT BREEZE
DESCRIPTION:MANSIONS TO MANUFACTURING \nSaturday\, July 12\n10:00 a.m. – Noon \n$25 per person \nThis tour is limited to 20 participants. \nPurchase a ticket below. Tickets will not be available after 11:30 p.m. on July 11. \nThis new tour will explore the history and evolution of the North Point Breeze neighborhood of George Westinghouse and H.J. Heinz. The mansions and large estates of the Gilded Age have given way to the current diverse\, middle-class neighborhood of single-family and multifamily homes\, as well as a mixed-use commercial complex. Topics will include the architecture of significant homes and buildings\, notable historical residents\, the Boulevard Park Plan of Thomas and McPherson Avenues\, and the restoration and development of the area now called  Rockwell Park. This 24-acre complex was created through re-use of early-20th-century abandoned industrial buildings—including one where Thomas Edison helped to invent a lamp that reduced mine explosions by 70 percent. Proving\, as is so often the case in Pittsburgh\, that the past is never very far removed from the present. \nTour meeting point: Beside the entrance to Pittsburgh Center for Creative Reuse\, 214 N. SUMMARY:SPECIAL TOUR: THE MURALS OF MAXO VANKA
DESCRIPTION:Join us on a special tour of St. Nicholas Croatian Catholic Church in Millvale\, PA \nSaturday\, June 28\n9:00 – 10:45 a.m. \n$25 per person \nThis tour is limited to 20 participants. \nPurchase a ticket below. Tickets will not be available after 11:30 p.m. on June 27. \nFrom the highway that allows you to zoom past the towns along the Allegheny River\, the yellow-brick church sitting on a slight rise above the road might not make a big impression. What’s inside St. Nicholas Croatian Catholic Church\, however\, could take one’s breath away: 25 murals\, covering every wall of the sanctuary\, that speak to matters of the spirit\, community\, armed conflict among nations\, and the experience of Croatian immigrants in Pittsburgh. \nThe story of the church\, the murals\, and their creator is the stuff of an epic movie—from an artist born the illegitimate child of Austrian nobility\, to a conflagration that destroyed the first church on this site less than 21 years after it was dedicated\, to the swift reconstruction and eventual embellishment of the existing church\, to the enormous present-day efforts to conserve the murals and stabilize the building. Our tour will be led by staff of\, and consultants to\, the Society to Save the Millvale Murals of Maxo Vanka and will cover all aspects of this truly remarkable place. \nTour meeting point:  Sanctuary of St. Nicholas Croatian Catholic Church\, 24 Maryland Avenue\, Millvale\, PA 15209 \nTour ending point:  Sanctuary of the Church \nPlease arrive 15 minutes before start time in order to ensure that the tour gets underway on time. \nAccessibility: St. Nicholas Croatian Catholic Church has accessible parking and an accessible entrance; all murals are visible from the ground floor of the sanctuary. Please note that there currently is no wheelchair-accessible restroom at the church. For more information\, please visit https://vankamurals.org/visit/frequently-asked-questions/. This tour is handicap accessible. Please notify us of your needs two business days in advance of the tour. \n_______________________________________________________________________ \nAll tour participants under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Tickets will not be available after 11:30 p.m. on June 19. \nWhen George Woods and Thomas Vickroy laid out the street plan for Pittsburgh in 1784\, they could not have imagined the numerous transformations that the public center of the plan—Market Square—would experience in the future. Through all the changes in the ensuing 240 years\, Market Square has remained an important space Downtown\, geographically\, economically\, and culturally. In this place where historic architecture encounters ongoing change\, you will learn about the Square’s history and the preservation work done by PHLF to help revive this area\, once threatened by extensive demolition. SUMMARY:FOCUS: HIGHLIGHTS OF THE HISTORIC WILLIAM PENN HOTEL
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, June 13\n10:00 – 11:30 a.m. \n$25 per person. This tour is limited to 20 participants. \nPurchase a ticket below. Tickets will not be available after 11:30 p.m. on June 12. \nThe historic William Penn Hotel is without question the grandest hotel in Downtown Pittsburgh\, if not the entire city. It was commissioned (along with two other buildings on Grant Street) by Henry Clay Frick\, who wanted Pittsburgh to have a hotel that would signal the City’s growing economic\, industrial\, and cultural status to the world. On opening in 1916\, it was lauded for the elegance of its design and its first-class amenities—including\, in every guest room\, electric lights\, a telephone\, and a bathroom. It was so successful that an addition was constructed in the 1920s\, completing the hotel’s command of its entire city block. \nThe general restraint of the William Penn Hotel’s exterior is complemented by its unapologetically glamorous interior spaces. The most distinguished of these will be the objects of our tour: an Art Deco room designed by the Austrian-American architect and set designer Joseph Urban; a ballroom in Renaissance Revival style; and The Speakeasy (it really was one!)\, which has been brought back to life in a contemporary interpretation of its 1920s namesakes. The tour will be led by a longtime member of the hotel’s executive staff and an architect/architectural historian. \nTour meeting point:  Lobby of the William Penn Hotel\, 530 William Penn Place (Pittsburgh\, PA 15219)\, \nTour ending point:  Lobby of the William Penn Hotel \nPlease arrive 15 minutes before start time in order to ensure that the tour gets underway on time. \nAccessibility: This tour is handicap accessible. Tickets will not be available after 11:30 p.m. on May 30. \nLocated about 30 miles southwest of Pittsburgh\, the city of Washington\, PA is perhaps best known as a key site in the Whiskey Rebellion in the 1790s and as the home of Washington & Jefferson College. It also is the seat of Washington County—the first county in America to bear the president’s name—and the home of the country’s first National Historic Landmark of the Underground Railroad. Our tour will take in a bit of both town and gown\, starting with a handful of Washington & Jefferson College’s most historic buildings. On walking to downtown Washington\, we will visit\, among other buildings\, the LeMoyne House of 1812 and the George Washington Hotel—designated a Historic Hotel of America by the National Trust for Historic Preservation for “faithfully maintain[ing its] historic integrity\, architecture\, and ambiance.” You will leave Washington with a new appreciation of this city on the National Road\, America’s first highway constructed (beginning in 1811) entirely with federal funds. \nTour meeting point:  Old Main\, campus of Washington & Jefferson College\, 30 S. College Street\, Washington\, PA 15301. Tickets will not be available after 11:30 p.m. on May 15. \nThe Union Trust Building is one of Downtown’s most distinctive structures. While its glorious interior is familiar to many\, there is much more to the building that the public does not get to see. On this tour\, led by the Union Trust Building’s senior property manager\, you will hear the building’s somewhat surprising history and its role in the development of  Grant Street\, learn about its recent comprehensive $100\,000\,000 restoration\, and see spaces and enhancements that typically only tenants have access to. SUMMARY:FOCUS: TWO LANDMARK CHURCHES OF DOWNTOWN
DESCRIPTION:Trinity Episcopal Cathedral and First Presbyterian Churches of Pittsburgh \nThursday\, May 1\n10:00 a.m. – Noon \n$25 per person \nThis tour is limited to 20 participants. \nPurchase a ticket below. Tickets will not be available after 11:30 p.m. on April 30. \nIt is difficult to miss the two churches in the 300 block of Sixth Avenue\, even amidst the bustle of pedestrians\, cars\, and busses there. Located side-by-side and elevated slightly above the street\, Trinity Cathedral Pittsburgh and First Presbyterian Church of Pittsburgh occupy land deeded to the two congregations by heirs of William Penn in 1787. Designed in variants of Gothic Revival style\, the two buildings provide a sober contrast—or perhaps a corrective?—to the dominance of business and commerce Downtown. Just as the churches have several general exterior features in common\, their interiors share great mastery and innovation in stained glass\, carved wood\, and other elements. \nStarting at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral and continuing to First Presbyterian Church of Pittsburgh\, this comprehensive tour will allow participants to absorb details and experience architectural space in ways that PHLF’s typical tours do not. Both parts of the tour will be led by church staff. \nTour meeting point:  Trinity Episcopal Cathedral\, 328 Sixth Avenue\, Pittsburgh\, PA 15222 Meet at main entrance to the Cathedral. \nTour ending point:  First Presbyterian Church\, 320 Sixth Avenue\, Pittsburgh\, PA 15222 \nPlease arrive 15 minutes before start time in order to ensure that the tour gets underway on time. \nAccessibility: Both churches are preceded by a flight of stairs from street level\, and complete experience of the buildings will require climbing additional stairs. Both churches have wheelchair-accessible entrances. If you will need to use these\, please contact Mary Lu Denny (marylu@phlf-dev.pfgsandbox.com or 412-471-5808\, ext. 527) by April 28\, so we can make arrangements with the churches. \n_______________________________________________________________ \nAll tour participants under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

The tour will explore Aspinwall’s history through its architecture and the important role resident Frederick Sauer played in the town’s development. \nTour meeting point: Aspinwall Borough Building\, 217 Commercial Street\, Aspinwall\, PA 15215 \nTour ending point: Aspinwall Borough Building \nPlease arrive 15 minutes before start time in order to ensure that the tour gets underway on time. Dress for the weather (PHLF tours proceed rain or shine!)\, and wear comfortable shoes. By purchasing a ticket for this tour\, you acknowledge that you are physically able to undertake the tour\, assume all personal risk during the tour\, consent to being photographed during the tour\, and permit PHLF to use your image in our communications. \nAccessibility: The tour route includes a steep climb up Center Avenue to view the buildings by Frederick Sauer. If accessibility is a concern for you\, please contact Mary Lu Denny (marylu@phlf-dev.pfgsandbox.com; 412-471-5808\, ext. 527) before registering.
