Station Square

Details

  • 52 acres of riverfront property, 5 historic railroad buildings adapted for reuse, 143 businesses, 3,000 jobs created

Station Square stands as one of the most significant examples of historic preservation and adaptive reuse in Pittsburgh’s history. PHLF conceived the project in 1975 when the Pittsburgh & Lake Erie Railroad buildings, constructed between 1897 and 1917, were threatened with demolition. From 1976 to 1984 PHLF served as prime developer, acquiring 52 acres of riverfront property along the Monongahela and adapting five historic railroad buildings for offices, shops, restaurants, and entertainment. The total investment by PHLF and its sub-developers exceeded $100 million, creating 3,000 jobs and 143 businesses. PHLF sold Station Square in 1994 after its historic preservation goals had been achieved.
