Greatest Saves:
Our organization is strongly opposed to a plan led by the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership and supported by the City of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, and the Allegheny Conference on Community Development, to close off vehicular traffic on all the streets leading into-and-out of historic Market Square. The proposal was first floated as part of a comprehensive plan to improve three areas of Downtown by creating green spaces and more affordable housing options in the Cultural District and the Golden Triangle. It sought to transform Market Square into an open pedestrianized square.
Renewing Communities
The Pittsburgh History & Landmarks Foundation (PHLF), was founded in 1964 by a group of citizens who passionately believed that historic preservation, rather than massive demolition, could be a tool for renewing communities, creating pride among residents, and achieving sustainable economic development.
Architects Erik and Kalina Kath, a creating a multi-live-and-work space in an 1800s era building that was near demolition when they bought it from the Community Alliance of Spring Garden- East. The couple are using a $350,000 loan from Landmarks Community Capital to restore the building, which is being adapted to create two residential units and an office for their practice.
As the lending arm of PHLF, Landmarks Community Capital Corporation (LCCC)— a non-profit subsidiary— advances the cause of preservation by extending loans to projects that facilitate renovation activities in historic neighborhoods throughout the Pittsburgh region.

When people think of cities, they often think of buildings. But it is streets rather than buildings that define cities, says Stanton Eckstut, a city-making architect. In this short film about the essential role of streets in urban life, Eckstut expounds on the function of streets as the place where the life of a city occurs and where what we value and remember the most about a city happens.
